About our Foundation
Impact Report Calendar
Ideally, every Oklahoman would have a dental benefits plan and Delta Dental of Oklahoma strives to make it available and affordable. But many Oklahomans are still uninsured, and unable to afford necessary prevention and care. Many live in underserved rural areas without dental services nearby. And many are unaware of the actions they can take to help avoid dental disease.
As a not-for-profit corporation, Delta Dental of Oklahoma is committed to significant, ongoing contributions to Oklahoma communities. Our mission is to help provide access to quality dental care and education to every Oklahoman. We work to accomplish this mission through our Oral Health Foundation.
|The mission of the Delta Dental of Oklahoma Oral Health Foundation
is to facilitate dental health and education
in the state of Oklahoma
by funding programs and services that promote oral health.
The Foundation fulfills its mission by performing a variety of functions, such as:
Providing grants to numerous free and low-cost inner-city and rural dental clinics and services to help provide vital care to those less fortunate
Publishing the Resource for Dental Care guide and newsletter to help connect dental care resources to each other and to those in need
Educating thousands of elementary age children each year about good oral hygiene and dental disease prevention through our Captain Supertooth program
Supporting the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry and its outreach and educational programs
Awarding scholarships to Oklahoma dental students who intend to practice in Oklahoma upon graduation, increasing the number of dentists in our state

Background: A Legacy of Giving
In late 2010 the Delta Dental of Oklahoma Charitable Foundation changed its name to the Delta Dental of Oklahoma Oral Health Foundation to better communicate its mission.
“Our Charitable Foundation is totally focused on oral health,” said John Gladden, president and CEO of Delta Dental. “We do not provide grants for non-dental related endeavors. Expanding the Foundation’s name to include ‘oral health’ helps potential grantees to identify our mission and clarifies to the community what we are all about.”
From 1998 to the present, Delta Dental of Oklahoma has contributed nearly $5 million to dental health and education related programs through its Foundation. Since 2009, Delta Dental has contributed 50% of its contribution to reserves to the Foundation, bringing its annual giving to more than $1.4 million
“There is so much need in Oklahoma and we are in a unique position to dramatically improve the availability of more care and education,” said John Gladden, president and CEO. “Our hope is to be able to take this increased funding to provide further support to dental professionals volunteering their time and make the Foundation the center of benevolent dental care for all Oklahomans. We believe it’s our responsibility to do so.”

2010 Impact Report Calendar
In December 2009, the Delta Dental of Oklahoma Oral Health Foundation, formerly known as the Delta Dental of Oklahoma Charitable
Foundation, released a Community Impact Report. The format of the report was a 2010 calendar featuring several foundation grant recipients.
“We were looking for a way to spread the word about the amazing work being done by our grant recipients throughout the state,” said John Gladden, Delta Dental CEO. “Unlike typical annual reports, the calendar format serves as a yearlong useful tool that we think people will really enjoy.”

Delta Dental of Oklahoma Foundation Honored by Beacon Awards
The Delta Dental of Oklahoma Foundation was recognized for “Lighting the Way in Oklahoma” in July when it accepted the 2010 Beacon Award presented by The Journal Record. The 2010 awards mark The Journal Record’s third annual tribute to area businesses and organizations for their contributions to the nonprofit community. In 2009, Delta Dental of Oklahoma contributed more than $1.4 million to its Charitable Foundation for the support of dental health and education-related programs statewide. The Foundation was also awarded this honor in 2008.
“We are grateful to the tireless dental volunteers and staff who provide free and low-cost dental care to thousands of Oklahomans who need it the very most,” said Delta Dental of Oklahoma CEO John Gladden. “Advancing the oral health of every Oklahoman is at the core of Delta Dental’s mission. We hold the communities we serve in high regard, and we are proud to say we are Oklahomans serving Oklahomans.”

Delta Dental of Oklahoma Inducted into the OU Seed Sower Society
The Delta Dental of Oklahoma Foundation has been named as a member of the University of Oklahoma’s Seed Sower Society, which honors donors whose gifts to OU total $1 million or more. The Foundation was recognized for contributing more than $1 million to the OU College of Dentistry since 2001.
“We are deeply grateful for Delta Dental’s exceptional support of the OU College of Dentistry, including generous scholarships for deserving dental students, key contributions for new software to assist the college with upgrading its clinic management systems, vital funds to help offset the cost of providing quality dental care to patients with little or no income, and funding for satellite learning centers for dental hygienists around the state,” said OU President David Boren.
Delta Dental of Oklahoma president and CEO, John Gladden, and Dr. Michael McLeod, Foundation Chairman, accepted the honor from the Dean of the College of Dentistry, Dr. Stephen Young, during the OU Dean’s Circle Dinner held at the Governor’s mansion. In his acceptance speech Gladden emphasized the importance of dental professional volunteerism. “Without volunteer dental professionals you only have half the equation: the money half. With them you multiply the force of the money by 10 – a powerful impact,” Gladden said. “The OU College of Dentistry is producing more than just dentists here. You are producing dental professionals with heart and a spirit of community and volunteerism like few other professions.”
The Seed Sower name was selected for this special society because, like OU’s first president, David Ross Boyd, generous donors play an extraordinary role in planting seeds of excellence at the University of Oklahoma. All Seed Sower members receive a specially made Seed Sower statue created by noted sculptor and OU artist-in-residence Paul Moore.
