A School-Based Sealant Program Serving At-Risk Students

Delta Dental of Oklahoma Oral Health Foundation conducts a school-based sealant program that serves second and sixth grade students attending low-income Oklahoma public schools.
Dental sealants are protective plastic coatings applied to a child’s permanent first and second molars soon after eruption (around second and sixth grades) and have been proven to reduce future tooth decay by 80 percent.
Besides cost, there are many barriers to dental sealants for children in lower income homes, including parents who don’t know the importance of preventive dental care or who cannot afford to take off work for a preventive dental visit.
“The unfortunate fact is, many of the children we will serve at these schools are not going to be taken to a dentist until they are in pain, unless we intercede,” said John Gladden, president and CEO of Delta Dental of Oklahoma. “Besides sealing teeth at this critical time in the children’s development, we are also committed to helping bridge the gap between them and a nearby dental home to ensure ongoing dental care.
Under the authorization of Erin Sexson, DDS, the Cavity Prevention Clinics are conducted onsite during school hours by registered dental hygienists utilizing portable dental equipment. “I’m excited to be a part of this pilot,” said Sexson. “Helping to create a program that undeniably impacts the future oral health of children has been very rewarding.”
